You can see what's going on? What's going on? What's going on? Good morning, Las Vegas, this Veterans Affairs plus on 91.5, jazz and more. I am Dave Washington, your host. Look forward to speaking with you all this morning. And we have a couple of guests that we will introduce shortly. You know, this is a Women's History Month. And that being said, one thing I want to announce real quickly is please check out left of center art galleries out on Gowan road you can Google it, they do have a website but check out left of center Art Gallery out on Gowen road birthdays. This is a birthday of a good friend of mine, Mike Cooper. He and I are the same age. In fact, his birthday is coming up and so as Ernest found my brother in law birthdays in March, we're the good old Pisces as far as acknowledgments and condolences. I want to really talk about some ancestors and I won't editorialize the various names some I'll say a couple of things about them real quickly, again, in light of the fact that this is Women's History Month, and I'm acknowledging some ancestors. One is Eugene Watkins. That's my grandmother. Mary Wilson. That's the grandmother on my father's side. Gina. Mother is name is a Misurina. We used to call her and she was a tough cookie to deal with Ella Turner. That's my godmother out of Detroit, Michigan. My mother, Eugene Washington white. My aunt, one of my favorite aunts Georgia Grayson, my wife's mother, Mary fountain. And again, these are ancestors they they've gone on to the kingdom. Jackie Kennedy, daughter to LC and Magnolia Kennedy. My sister, Deborah tipo was her nickname. That's my nephew Cliff's mother. And Miss Willie Wimberly. A good friend of mine, that was his mother, Paul Wimberly. He was a dear friend for many, many years, we went to high school and some parts of elementary together, Margie Lindsey, longtime family friend, and my grant, my son, I'm saying grandson, my son's biological grandmother, Betty Mosley, again, an ancestor. So, just wanted to acknowledge a couple of folks and we'll probably do a few more next month, even though next month will not be Women's History Month, but I just thought it was important to acknowledge some of the women that that I'm aware of that had done good things in the lives of many, many people. Once again, this is 91.5, jazz and more. I'm Dave Washington, your host. Our first guest is Miss Sondra Marshall, and she is the leader of the American Legion Auxiliary. And is that right?
Unknown Speaker 4:08
That's correct. I am the president. Okay,
Unknown Speaker 4:10
President. So tell us a little bit about that organization and what role do you play with that group? Okay.
Unknown Speaker 4:17
I am the president of the American Legion unit 10 have been for at least one year. We are located at the American Legion Post. And that's 1905 H Street, Las Vegas. We're on the historic west side. You know my my commitment and purpose and goal is to guide the unit in a direction to better serve the veterans, their families and the communities with the assistance and dedication of the officers and members. We are working towards that goal.
Unknown Speaker 4:54

Unknown Speaker 5:07
correct? Yes. Okay, excellent.
Unknown Speaker 5:10
So what are the requirements to become a member?
Unknown Speaker 5:17
The requirements to become a member, you have to be a family member of a male or female veteran of the American Legion. So that that will include mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, spouse, and adopted female descendants. If the veteran is deceased, there's other documents that you can present, you know, to make you qualified.
Unknown Speaker 5:43
Okay. So when and where do you guys meet?
Unknown Speaker 5:49
We meet on the second Saturday of each month at 11 o'clock at the post. And that's American Legion. Post him on H. H Street.
Unknown Speaker 5:59
what's your what's your current membership? Do you have a number offhand?
Unknown Speaker 6:04
I do. I do 45 members that comprise it. And we have a lot of lifetime members and members who have been in the organization for many, many years. So
Unknown Speaker 6:17
what are you doing to grow to continue to grow, I should say the membership
Unknown Speaker 6:24
recruitment, recruitment, recruitment, that's always important, you know, spread the word, meet and greet. And we have new individuals that stop into the post, we greet them and tell them what we're all about what we're doing, and what our future goals are. And with that being said, can I give you some of the recent events that we have done? The auxilary has sponsored a Thanksgiving dinner, where we served all our veterans. We had a Christmas celebration dinner, and we gave out gifts. And we had a lot of positive conversations. At that time, around Christmas, the posts and the auxilary distributed 300 Plus gifts, including 45 Plus bikes to the community. And that was a wonderful event. Wonderful. We we even served them with hot dogs and chips and use and gift cards.
Unknown Speaker 7:27
I'm sure there was some smiling faces at the end.
Unknown Speaker 7:33
Yes, currently we have a table discussion for early opening up the posts for coffee and donuts for the for the older veterans.
Unknown Speaker 7:43
When When are you do you do that when? Well, that's

Unknown Speaker 10:09
I intend to get your husband on in the next month or so to talk about some of the things that he's involved in because in fact, I give Tony his name and number out gently after each show or during each show because it's important. So, this being Women's History Month, is there anyone that you can think of that you hold in high esteem in terms of a woman with leadership mentoring, etc, etc, or just in general? Any thoughts?
Unknown Speaker 10:40
That would be my my mother, who has passed on my, my grandmother, maternal and paternal years as Pat Feaster. She's, she's very instrumental in my life. She's a great mentor. Well, I would like to say hi to her and thank you to her. Oh, yeah. And just all of the all of the black females. All of them, just thank you.
Unknown Speaker 11:12
Well, you know, I know Miss Pat Feaster. I've known her for many, many years her children and, and her cousin Ray Fisher is a long time. Dear friend of mine. In fact, he just had a birthday on Sunday turn 81. But yeah, Pat Feaster is a is a wonderful woman who's done a lot in the community. And I know her well. And I too appreciate the work that she's done in terms of mentoring young women, throughout our community so that I wish you will. And I trust that we will get information to you. So you can listen to this actual show that we're talking about the good works that you've done, and we know that God will continue to bless you for that work that you have done. So thank you. So again, I think it's important to repeat again, the stand down with the information on it and where and we're

Okay, she has gas stations that we you know, we have a paper there as finished fat, the VFW Post, one to one A, the commander of Lou and then also the Tony Marshall. He's the co founder of that chapter. He helped me. They helped me deliver paper to all those gas stations and also the EBI veteran clinic. You can take it. We have a paper there and all the various veteran organizations. We also have a paper there in Henderson. I have 15 locations, and Pahrump. I have about 20 locations and a paper go from Las Vegas to forearm and two out of the separate cities. Because thank you from the help of a Dav in the disabled veterans I think No no, no, DAV Dav is called disabled veteran right.
Unknown Speaker 17:52
Okay, that
Unknown Speaker 17:53
may help me in in the pool of people leave by the Thomas Dorsey that he helped me deliver a paper when the when the DAV when picked up the the the VA veterans vacations that they print the paper to that term. So the paper was there helped that we go to muskie, go to Loveland and we go to a concert Valley and City of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas also the Nellis Air Force Base. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 18:44
well this afternoon some pretty good pretty good coverage.
Unknown Speaker 18:50
Yep, almost out of town have a natural safe saturated but they can look for they can help the paper.
Unknown Speaker 18:58
Yeah, well, it's ironic that you mentioned prompt I happen to go out and visit a friend yesterday and I noticed the sign as I was going into town it says a Purple Heart town. So apparently they recognize all the folks who have got that award doing their military service, which is really cool.
Unknown Speaker 19:20
Yeah, and I also this Friday may make sure 10am to 2pm that pourront has a special event called the veteran extravaganza. Okay, and as the as the in the Pahrump is the location is at the far wrong Community Center, highway 160 and basin Avenue, Pahrump Nevada. So if anybody in prompts are going to be there on Friday, please stop by there. Because this event is The era in 2013. Now again, for veterans concerns this only that this
Unknown Speaker 20:07

Unknown Speaker 21:02
Unfortunately, there'll be just the day before we actually air and I always fully disclose that this show is taped. But I got a little information that I can share with people on my personal. And I'll make sure that I do that. Because I think it's important for anytime that there's a veterans function going on, we should try to make sure we get the word out to everyone. And we will do that in this case.
Unknown Speaker 21:26
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. So thank you, Chief, you're, you're awesome.
Unknown Speaker 21:32
So Sue, awesome. Sue, I want I want to again, just have you to give that information on. Because you say this is global, they can go online and actually see and read the newspaper.
Unknown Speaker 21:44
Yeah, I have to issue online all the time. I have a current issue and previous issue. So
Unknown Speaker 21:52
give that information on how they can how they can retrieve this
Unknown Speaker 21:55
information. They can go to WWE. veteran reporter news.com
Unknown Speaker 22:01
WW. Veterans
Unknown Speaker 22:06
report on a news.com reporter.
Unknown Speaker 22:11
News news.com. Yes. Great. Okay. Because I'll continue to share that with folks as well. So much, and again, it seems like you get it well covered with with respect to various locations that you can get this out to. So, again, Sue, I wanted you on here for two reasons. One, of course, to share information about the paper itself, but also, this is women's history month. Month. Have you got any thoughts that you would like to share in that regard?
Unknown Speaker 22:44
Woman extremists, I think the vet, the woman veteran this issue on March 1 issue, I have my friend Dr. Tom water from peran. He's a teeny he's he's going to give me an article regarding a three star generals, which is a locally, I think that about her stories in a veteran. And I'm thinking about get surely Berkeley. I'm going to get in touch with her on the march 15th issue. I want her I want to highlight her. In my paper. She made the history while she was Congress. woman. She is the one who started today. Our va 6600. Right. Pecos. The VA Hospital. Okay, huge one. He is the one who's initiating.
Unknown Speaker 23:43
You're saying surely Berkeley as as a congressperson initiated the hospital, the veterans hospital? Yes.
Unknown Speaker 23:51
And then also in her term, I think in her time that the hospital was built. It was really amazing. And you know, at that time, she wasn't thinking about because a lot of veteran complained to her about the inconvenience. So she said, Well, if we have the inconvenience, we can fix it. So she started, put her her team together and started that virtual hospital and which is benefits the 1000s 1000s people we veteran already, you know, can't thank her enough for you know, for for doing this for us.
Unknown Speaker 24:29
Well, that's certainly very interesting that, you know, as we age, we forget things. But it's good that you're sharing that information on what the former Congresswoman did with respect to that Veterans Hospital. Excellent. So, Sue, is there any closing remarks you'd like to share with us?
Unknown Speaker 24:47
Oh, closing remark we just Well, that's really important news. Is that paper only have a three issue three major, three major cause CERN is a picture Tizen charter truth neutral. And this paper is run by myself. So, you know, if we can have a people to support me to, to put the ad in the paper so I can improve the paper and keep the papers longevity. And we'd like everybody to go to a veteran to put a noose, you know, to read the paper and also, if they can, you know, give me good stories, you know, because the veteran reporter news is just like a balloon inside opponents out of air that are the veterans community, right. And also, it's my way to buy, buy, produce veteran reporter news, my way to say thank you to the United States of America, and also a memory of my late husband. She's nice massage and Eugene a felt Excellent.
Unknown Speaker 26:00
Well said. Yeah, we appreciate the work that he did. And, and it's really honorable for you to take over and keep things moving. So thank you, so, and you take care of yourself, and we'll continue to spread the word with regards to veterans reported news. Thank you. So
Unknown Speaker 26:19
thank you so much. Thank you, Chief.
Unknown Speaker 26:21
All right. Take care.
Unknown Speaker 26:22
Okay, thank you.
Unknown Speaker 26:24
Bye bye. Once again, Las Vegas. Good morning. This is Veterans Affairs plus on 91.5, jazz and more. I want to thank Wes for keeping me on track as always. And as we close out the show today, I want to just encourage you guys to spare the word. It is my intent to have Deborah Kim Campbell. She is a veteran. She's the wife of my good friend Eugene Campbell, who was one of my colleagues with Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. I also hope to get and at Nance whole cheese Fire Commissioner for the city of Chicago. I'm trying to make contact and hopefully we'll get to a taping time that will be good for her. And also another first as chief Rosemary cloud, she is the first black woman to head up a paid professional fire department. And my goal is I did speak to her today we hopefully will be able to get her on the show for a second some time for the later part of the month, in fact, so hoping to get that done. Also, I'm going to have the last show with my daughters, because they are women who are making significant contributions to our community. That's April, Angel and Amber. And as we prepare to end this show, I just want to reiterate something that Miss Sandra who was the head of the American Legion Post, teens woman's exalt exemplary, she talked about March 22. There's a stand down that will occur at the silver nugget, Hotel Casino or Casino. I don't think there's a hotel there. I'm sorry about that. But hopefully, we will get the word out for those two to come and share in that activity. Dora le grand on a previous show did some good work for us. And we hope to get her back. And and one thing I want to say about Dora in that particular show, which is a show earlier this month is that Dora is very instrumental in working with the Metropolitan Police Department's multicultural committee. And also she works with the recruitment for Metro encouraging blacks to join that department. And Miss Sue Phelps. She's doing a wonderful job with the veterans. Reporting you news. So please check that out. Because I think it's important for us veterans in particular to to share any stories that you may have. I know that Tony, Tony marshal our service officer, he did a story on me for her and that was a story that was that was in there. So once again, this is Veterans Affairs plus on 91.5. Jas and more. Thank you Wes for always doing a great job for us and we look forward to interacting with you as a community next month Veterans Affairs plus on 91.5. Jazz or more Dave Washington signing out for this show.
